Neighbours and eyewitnesses today told of chaotic scenes as an elderly driver lost control of his Mercedes, smashing part of a brick wall and pushing over a set of traffic lights, killing a young woman and a student was left injured.

Off-duty doctors who heard the crash rushed to the scene in West Hampstead but were unable to save the unnamed woman in her 30s.

The other injured woman, Amy Werner, 23, was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment, and doctors are hoping to perform surgery on her later today. Ms Werner is a postgraduate bursary student at University of Westminster, enrolled on a course in Events and Conference Management.
