Mark Zuckerberg announced on US television on Thursday that more than one billion people are using Facebook every month. Alongside the announcement, Facebook said its users had produced a mind-boggling 1.13trillion Likes, shared 219billion photos and 140.3billion friend connections.
The site, which was launched in 2004, is now looking towards emerging markets to build its user base further.
In his recent status update, Mr Zuckerberg wrote, "If you're reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honor of serving you".
He added 'Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.'
